Somebody's got one groove worn out and that's it, or a shop just wants single rings sitting on the shelf instead of cash tied up in kits half the customers won't need. What Is a Piston Ring?
It's a thin metal band, split at one point so it can flex, sitting in a groove machined into the piston. Spring tension pushes it out against the cylinder wall. That's really all a piston ring is. The shape isn't the interesting part though, where it sits matters a lot more.
A diesel piston carries three of them, usually. Two compression rings up top, one oil control ring underneath. And no, that order isn't random, people ask us this a lot. The top ring eats the worst of the heat and combustion pressure straight off the crown. Second ring backs it up, mops up whatever blow-by slips past ring one. Then down at the bottom, the oil ring is doing something completely different from the two above it, it's not sealing anything, it's wiping oil off the wall. Get that diesel engine piston ring position backwards during a rebuild and the engine will tell you within hours, usually with smoke.
Piston ring types, if you want the short version: compression and oil control. Two categories. The oil ring usually has a little coil expander tucked behind it too, keeps the tension even around the whole circumference instead of stronger in one spot.
How a Piston Ring Works?
People ask about the function of a piston ring like it's complicated. It isn't. Seal the combustion pressure, scrape the oil, move some heat off the piston. That's the piston ring purpose, and honestly most of a rebuild manual's ring section is just explaining those three things in more words than they need. Compression rings hold the pressure above the piston so it actually pushes the crankshaft around instead of leaking past the skirt and doing nothing useful. The oil ring leaves just enough film to lubricate the wall, then scrapes the rest off before it gets into the combustion chamber and burns.
Heat transfer gets skipped in a lot of explanations, but it matters. Rings pull heat off the crown and hand it over to the cylinder wall, where the coolant can actually get rid of it. No heat path there and pistons start cooking themselves from the inside, which is a bad way to find out your rings failed.
A tired piston ring engine usually tells on itself before a compression tester does. Blue smoke, oil that keeps disappearing between changes, compression numbers that keep dropping a little more each time you check. All roads lead back to the rings. Piston ring issues we see most often: carbon glazing a ring into its groove until it can't move, the end gap closing up from heat until the ring locks against the bore, or the coating finally wearing through and scoring the cylinder wall underneath it. None of it happens overnight. Catch it during a scheduled overhaul and it's a small job. Miss it and you're rebuilding the whole thing later, probably at the worst possible time, because that's how engines work.

Fitment runs off the engine model, not whatever machine it's bolted into today. Check the block or valve cover for the stamped model first. Then bore condition, standard rings if the cylinder's still at spec, oversize (0.25 mm, 0.50 mm, 0.75 mm) if somebody's already rebored it.
